For most people, Saturday mornings are for sleeping in and relaxing after a busy week at work. For Rachel, Saturday mornings are for serving and eating breakfast with her friends who are currently experiencing homelessness.

How did you get involved with Saturday Morning Breakfast and Showers?

7 years ago, I needed to fill parent service hours with Valley Christian and volunteered for the day. It was a full day of parents and they requested that some of us go to the tables and chat with our neighbors. It was one of the best days ever. I got to visit and get service hours just hanging out. I've been going every Saturday ever since.

What is your favorite part about serving at Saturday Morning Breakfast and Showers?

My favorite part of serving are the relationships that have been built throughout the years. In 2018, I became very ill and received phone calls from my friends from Saturday Morning Breakfast and Showers offering to bring me food, and I knew that the tables had turned and they were now praying for me. These are real friendships that I cherish.

What is one positive thing you have learned about the community while serving at Saturday Morning Breakfast and Showers?

God's love reaches us all. A simple hug or conversation goes a long way. Sometimes just listening and letting someone know you're praying for them throughout the week is an open door to a new friendship.

What advice do you have for people interested in serving their community?

Pray for God to lead you in your daily routine. Have him show you something new, maybe out of your comfort zone. If He opens a door for you, walk through it, even if it's scary. His plans are perfect.
